Stupid Snow. & Liquor. [Dec. 19th, 2009|11:04 am]

[Current Location |bed]

I can see myself living somewhere tropical and not seeing snow for 10 years at a time. Would I miss it? I would miss the occasional novelty of it. "Snow? Oh, remember snow? It would fall? Things would get cold and wet and white?" Yeah.

So there is an easy foot of snow outside right now, I am literally trapped here with my family, and my plans to finish shopping and see Avatar with an old friend are flying out the window. Worst of all? As bad as the snow is, there is no conscionable way I can miss work on Monday. There could be three feet of snow outside, (and there may be,) but I have to go to work. If I don't submit payroll on Monday, nobody will get paid on Christmas Eve. FML.

Sooo today I will make cookies, blog, and play Rollercoaster Tycoon (the original, and the original expansion pack, FTW.)

Also: Had a helluva night Thursday night, as anticipated. Decided for sure that I absolutely love playing King's Cup.

However, we got some of the rules mixed up and then couldn't remember what to do on a Jack. Finally, we all decided that the most logical thing to do was have just have everybody take a shot of Jack Daniels when somebody pulled a Jack.

.........bad idea.

My circle has some interesting commonly requested King rules though. Like "every time you drink you have to pretend to be a velociraptor." You know how ridiculous it is to watch a bunch of people continuously screeching and holding their cups like a dinosaur?

Clo: EVERYBODY LOOK.....THAT LIGHT FIXTURE LOOKS LIKE A TIT!
Anna: Okaaay; 7 is ... heaven! (everyone points except me) Sarah! You drink!
Me: ...SSCCCRRREEEEERRREEEE!
Clo: AHAHAHAH!! I WAS JUST STILL POINTING AT THE TIT!

...No wonder they tried to ban alcohol that one time. Shame it didn't work out. Still - good way to keep warm, I suppose.

Best misquote I've heard from any of my clients this week? And this was sung at the top of their lungs with absolute dead seriousness.

Chinese like a melody in my head that I can't keep singing wrong, got me singing like na na na everydays, like my eyeball's stuck on replay.

Somedays I love my guys.

goods and services... [Dec. 17th, 2009|08:51 pm]

This week we've been learning about Goods & Services in economics. Every year this proves to be a bit of a hard to grasp concept for my six year olds.

note: the language they use for the children is this:
Goods: Things people make or use to satisfy needs and wants.
Services: Activities that satisfy people’s needs and wants.

When we first start talking about this, my gorgeous students get these looks of rather a lot of intense concentration, and then confusion on their face and essentially give me the old: "Um, awesome, miz F, this is so great and yay learning and all, but, um... what in the ever loving bzuh does that just mean?"

So, we act some things out. We tell little stories. We circle some of the words that make our heads go fuzz-buckets and define them. We do little projects. Eventually we get to this very basic distillation: things you can touch? Goods. Things you can do? Services.

Yes. Not completely accurate. But a lot of the kids need a way of classifying consistently before they can start discussing or thinking more deeply and delving into the grey areas (can something be a good AND a service? whoa...)

Anyway, so we're on our way to this place right now. Today when we were waiting for our reading buddies to arrive, we had a couple of minutes, so I said: "Alright, let's play Goods & Services!" I called out something (books! pencils! putting out a fire!) and the kids called back what it exemplified (goods! services!).

We do have a raucous good time in first grade, I tell you.

Later, in the library, our librarian was reading the children a story in which the two main characters had just done something and were "...carrying the tree inside..."

Immediately, Adin bursts out, "That's a service!"

Yeppers, ladies and gentlemen. *tips hat* Those are my students. Extending learning beyond the four walls of our classroom.

*proud sigh*

[also, has it seriously been a week since I posted? Where does the time go??]

Printing press. [Dec. 17th, 2009|11:45 am]

My problem with finding a job is that no potential employment seems desireable nor likely to happen. For instance: me as internationally recognized rock star: unlikely to happen. Me as an IT professional: undesireable. Me as A-list fiction novelist: unlikely to happen. Me as a journalist: undesireable. Etc.

Immediate, harsh prejudice against 99% of all potential jobs has really limited my options. (I have only an idea of what being a journalist is really like, mainly formed from watching Teri Hatcher in Lois & Clark as a kid - and even that couldn't sway me into the career.) But despite all these mental "closed doors" as my father puts it, I did think of one career that sort of appeals to me. Being a printer.

Holy whoa - a 7' guy came into the office. MMM. See I have ideas about what I like - andro girls, asian girls, gothy girls, Penelope Cruz - but then shit like this happens and completely messes with my sexuality labels! I wish I understood what height has to do with it all...I mean, the most fantastic man in the world may be 5' tall and I would look right over him at a 7' tall idiot/jerk. I hate that humans/people are like that, even myself. Then again...I hear from many sources that your attraction/love grows as you grow to know the person and their personality better, so you could have the cold fish feel for Mr. 5' and then over the years find him utterly irresistable, even after he's put on a few pounds and grown an unflattering beard. Let's hope for that because it's unlikely I'm going to end up with a movie star.

In any case: Attractive 7' tall salt n' pepper 40-year-old men are hanging about the office today.... *Fans self discreetly*

Of course not only does this include my hiring the 3 staff we have been missing for close to 8 months now it involves me terminating 2 of you entirely and hoping you choose never to darken the doors of social services again. Sometimes I sit in wait to pounce on one of your larger fuck ups so we can just be done with this charade of "notes to file" bullshit.

Sammich. Party. TV. [Dec. 15th, 2009|09:52 am]

humanyouth
[Tags|]

...Making a sammich for lunch. Don't care it's 9:30 AM. Sooo, today I have to help a co-worker learn computers. Literally. Like, starting with, "Have a seat. This is called a computer..." And moving on to "..So this software was developed specifically for us and the manual is a slim 350 pages on PDF..." Yeah....highlight of the week for me.

Sunday night I was gifted with a place to hold my ideal New Year's party, so stay tuned for more info about that. Might be there, might be elsewhere, as long as it's not at my house!

That will be hard, though: escaping the house with my sister in tow. I mean, what excuse can you really give for going out for the night at 8:30 pm on New Year's Eve? "Bye dad, we're off...going camping/to a church outing/cosmic bowling/to grandma's/to Chloe's/to the rocky horror picture show......nothing really works New Year's Eve. Might as well say "Bye dad, off to a party with booze and boys. See you around noon tomorrow." As good as anything else, and honest, at least.

This has been on my mind (pardon the long set-up:) Yesterday I saw part of "Jeremiah Johnson," which is supposedly a western but not the kind I like. At one point, Cowboy Johnson AKA Robert Redford with a beard is talking to an Indian chief. To avoid conflict, he offers a gift that ended up meaning more to the natives it did to him (extra horses and some scalps.) These gifts hold a lot of meaning to them, but we are informed they believe it is very rude to offer a gift that the other party cannot "top." Whatever. But eventually the chief gives Johnson his daughter to top it. (Horray, women were slightly better than some horses and some dead people hair.)

But this seemed extreme, so I asked my dad, "Hey, when two unfamiliar cultures talk through an interpreter, they're always getting offended by each other. Don't they ever take into account that the people they're talking to are strangers to their way of life, and allow for mistakes like that? If someone from a different part of the world came to Warrenton and started waving at everyone with their middle finger, we might laugh and maybe even shield our childrens' eyes, but we'd also say, 'oh, he just doesn't know, so we're not offended...'"

And my Dad said: "IT'S. JUST. TELEVISION."

....I sat in silence as it sunk in: I had actually never considered that the entire basis of my question came from my 'observing' these intercultural interactions in movies and on tv. Not real life.

I'm pretty screwed, aren't I?

I am in the middle of a monster study session. Cannot watch Merlin until I take notes on 65 pages of terminology text and read the chapters on dosages and conversions.

Am taking a tea break and checking my mail.

Vashu Ze Stanpedu. Disney princesses. Flat friends. [Dec. 12th, 2009|06:50 pm]

humanyouth
Found Vash's coat at HistoricalWeaponsStore.com, which delighted me because it was the only anime costume for sale there :) Horray for standing out in the historical/western genre!!

...and boo for me really wanting to shop online and knowing I can't spend money right now. I did well this week overall, but I've spent $15 this weekend and had better stop there.

...and boo, my hero [info]cathuhhrine got squished by a hit and run driver last week. (Um, she's ok, hence the flippancy.) Don't worry, your brains will grow back, buddy - it's probably just the meds they've got you on for the time being.

I have a computer camera and I wish livejournal had a direct-embed function like facebook. I'm too lazy to plan the picture, pose, take it, save it, crop it, upload it and post it otherwise.

Holy smack, I saw The Princess and the Frog today...it was bitchin'. See it! I'm pretty sure they were making subtle references to all the other Disney princess movies during the course of it, though I only caught maybe three. I really liked the bad guy and couldn't really find feminist fault with the heroine. A+.

To top it off, ANOTHER former co-worker I didn't know too well recognized me and let me in for free! This is the second time I've tried to pay and the box office person just waved me in. And to think, I'm afraid to bother my closer friends for free movies! That's it, I'm done trying to pay. I should just start taking this for granted.

Now...time to either write or get off the computer. Hmm.

So far this is turning out to be a very difficult morning.

My lap top won't recognize my network account connection. The new firewall is attempting to block EVERYTHING (hi - why are you trying to BLOCK me closing GOOGLE?) and I have to go to the hospital as my aunt was rushed into emergency surgery late yesterday afternoon.

Also I didn't buy enough boxes to send pressies in and one of the ones I did buy is far far far to large for anything I am putting into the mail.

*sigh*

Well, at least today is Merlin day (if my computer ever connects) and I have the TV back. :/

man I need make up therapy (no, I need water proof boots but I don't want that as that is not pretty).

Bah frelling Humbug indeed.

(Edit: still can't spell "surprised" apparently...must have something to do with the way I pronounce it...)

...So suprised to see that I didn't write a long-winded whiney livejournal post last night. So atypical of me.

I don't really usually go for this kind of music AT ALL, but this one song has been in my head over and over. The lyrics don't apply to me a all, I just think the song is loverly.

If I could pick a playlist right now (I have no music...none at all) It would include:
The above
Keisha - Tick Tock
a weighty slice of MSI
a choice smattering of German industrial and punk rock
The entire Kill Bill vol. 1 soundtrack.

Good day.

Walking to work this morning was a treacherous affair. And a ridiculously hot one as I wore my down jacket believing it would be cold outside (hello 32 degrees!). Now I am all sweaty and icky and gross and have to go straight from here to a holiday party. Awesome sauce.

Let's talk about TV eh?

What are you watching? What are your favorite shows? Tell tell me do! I am looking out for things to absorb during my holiday break and with all three of my shows ending for the season or on hiatus (SPN, Glee and Merlin in 2 weeks).

And if you want to spam me with thoughts on Glee feel free. :D

Also, happy happy happy birthday to [info]longleggedgit! I hope someone delivered on that Kurt/HSM crossover for you!
